52 Solar-Powered Irrigation Pumps Supplied to Acholi Farmer Groups

A total of 52 solar irrigation powered pumps have been supplied to farmer groups in Acholi sub region under a climate smart agriculture enhancement project last year.

Under the project is being implemented by Mercy Corps, a nonprofit Organisation through Tulima, a solar supply company and Northern Uganda Tractor Owners, Operators, mechanics, and Farmers SACCO (NUTOFA), farmers access the irrigation equipment at a subsidized rate of 40% while Mercy corps pays 60% of the cost.

The benefitting farmer groups are in Gulu, Amuru, Nwoya, Pader and Oyam districts.

Robert Achac Okok, the chairperson of NUTOFA says 58 more pumps are set to be supplied to small holder farmers in the next one month.

He says the beneficiary farmers have been able to engage in the off season farming of vegetables such as peppers, kales, and egg plants which is more marketable due to scarcity.
