“Not True” — Okwonga Dismisses Todwong’s Claims

Alfred Okwonga, the incumbent Gulu City Mayor has dismissed as false statements by Richard Todwong, the NRM secretary General that he supported Julius Acire Gunya for Mayor because Okwonga was undecided on contesting.

During an NRM thanks giving event held at Kaunda grounds on Saturday, Todwong told a gathering of thousands of party supporters that Okwonga wrote to him sometime last year indicating that he wanted to drop out of the Mayoral race.

Todwong says this led him to quickly identify Gunya to fill up the position.

But during a press conference at his office yesterday morning, Okwonga described this as blackmail adding that he wanted to drop out of the race after discovering that Todwong was supporting Gunya who was an independent candidate instead of him the official party flag bearer.

The Mayor said that he will fully support the Mayor elect in the interest of sustainable development of Gulu city.

Okwonga says he will handover office when the time comes and has also offered to support Gunya when needed.

He calls on incoming leaders to focus on fighting household poverty instead of giving handouts to locals.
