An elderly woman has been found dead in a lockup at Owino Market in Soroti City.
The deceased has been identified as Agnes Sagal, a Karimojong woman who operated a restaurant within the market.
Evelyn Amucu, a teenager who had been sleeping alongside Sagal in the lockup, said she was shocked to discover her friend’s lifeless body in the morning.
She says she had left Sagal alive earlier in the day.
Simon Peter Alongu, the LC1 Chairperson of Adurukoi Cell in Southern Ward, Usuk Town Council in Katakwi District says her parents have been informed about the incident.
Musa Oroma, the Assistant Resident City Commissioner of Soroti City and chairperson of the Owino Market vendors expresses concern that some individuals continue to sleep in market lockups despite repeated warnings from management about the risks involved.
He says the conditions in the market can be dangerous because people sleeping there are vulnerable to attacks and may not easily get help in case of emergencies.
Police in Soroti have launched investigations to establish the cause of Sagal’s death.
Her body has been taken to Soroti City Mortuary, where it awaits a postmortem examination.
