Vocational Training Proposed to Address Rising Crime in Gulu

Peter Banya, the deputy Resident City Commissioner for Pece-Laroo Division says arresting the criminals isn’t necessarily the best solution to curb crime considering the fact that most prisons are full to capacity.

He says some of the criminals have been given forms to go study from the presidential vocational skilling hub in Oding to enable them enhance their livelihood.

Banya appreciates partner organisations that are helping the city authorities in fighting criminal activities through youth vocational training like Comboni Sisters, and Reti among others.

As of the 23rd of January this year, Uganda Prisons held 80,581 inmates, with 41,924 convicts, 38,126 on remand and 481 judgment debtors yet the holding capacity of Uganda prisons currently stands at only 23,184 inmates.
