A senior tour guide at Fort Patiko says there is a need to improve facilities at the historical site in Anyadwe village, Patiko Sub County, Gulu district in a bid to attract more tourists.
Ronald Okello Onen, who has worked as a tour guide at Fort Patiko for 16 years says international tourists who visit the historical site frown upon using the latrines currently in place.
Onen says there is need for the Ministry of Tourism, Wild Life and Antiquities to put in place flash toilets.
Fort Patiko which sits on 73 hectares of land also needs other amenities such as restaurants and souvenir shops among others to keep tourists there longer.
The historical site was captured from Arab slave traders by Sir Samuel Baker, a European explorer in 1872.
It was gazetted as a historical site in 1972 and receives hundreds of visitors annually.
Onen says they received 150 visitors last year, majority of whom were pupils interested in getting a firsthand experience of the site which is examined in Primary Leaving Examinations, PLE.
