The Territorial Police in Kumi District are investigating a tragic fire incident that claimed the life of a 28-year-old businessman, Steven Jaali, a resident of Oparako Cell, Oputi Ward in Kanyumu Town Council.
The incident occurred today morning.
According to preliminary reports, Jaali had been charging his mobile phone battery directly from a solar battery when it reportedly burst into flames, igniting a fast-spreading fire that engulfed his house.
In an act of bravery, Jaali first rushed to safety his six-month-old baby, successfully rescuing the child from the burning house.
However, in a desperate attempt to salvage money from his business, he returned to the house a second time.
It was during this attempt that he was trapped and was burnt to death.
Stephen Mukombe, the South Kyoga Regional Police Spokesperson says the incident was reported to Kanyumu Police Post by the Town Mayor, Faustine Opit.
He further notes that the body of the deceased was conveyed to Atutur Hospital for a postmortem examination. Mukombe warns the public about fire safety, emphasizing the dangers associated with improper fuel storage and unsafe energy practices.
