A 17-year-old student has collapsed and died after police fired teargas to disperse unruly students at Kitgum Boma Grounds during the Uganda Secondary School Sports Association (USSSA) semi-final match.
The deceased, Francis Ojok, a student at Comprehensive College Main Campus, was pronounced dead on arrival at Kitgum General Hospital.
According to Joel Oloya, Regional Public Relations Officer for Aswa East Region, the incident occurred after a football match between Comprehensive College Main Campus and Rev. Jabulon Isoke Secondary School, which ended 1-0 in favour of Rev. Jabulon Isoke.
Oloya says the defeat angered Comprehensive College students, prompting some to plan a physical attack on their opponents before police intervened.
The exact cause of Ojok’s death has not yet been determined.
A postmortem examination will be conducted to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Oloya says police have visited the scene and the hospital, and statements have been recorded from relevant witnesses.
