Tension is rising within the National Resistance Movement (NRM) party due to members forming blocks with three of the party’s Councilors in Bardege-Layibi division vying for the Speakership office after a landslide victory in the Local Council elections.
Those in the race include; Angella Ngomokwe, the female Councilor for Patuda-Abuga, Akumu Hellen Sally, the female Councilor of For-god ward and Felix Adonyo, the male Councillor IV in charge of Kanyagoga ward.
Otim Francis, a DP candidate who is also the male Councilor for Kirombe ward is among those who have also expressed interest for the same position.
The tensions originate from the highly contested NRM-primary and general elections regarding the choice for the area Member of Parliament and City Lord Mayor positions in which Councilors belonged to different camps.
Felix Adonyo says his experience in local government leadership with 15 years of service gives him an advantage over the other candidates having served as deputy speaker of the division.
Akumu Sally however says it is her desire to serve the people which is driving her to contest as the Speaker of Bardege-Layibi division.
Sally however notes with concern the pre-events during the party’s primary election and general election which forced members to create alliances especially on the Mayoral choice and parliamentary seats that has left members divided.
Jacob Otobi, the NRM party chairman for Bardege-Layibi division says the party will not interfere in the Speakership race.
