
A Uganda People’s Defense Forces (UPDF) soldier has been shot dead by suspected cattle rustlers in Yumbe district.
The deceased is 42 year old Sergeant Mukundane Jonas, the In-Charge of Kupia Army Detachment, Kerwa Sub-County in Yumbe District.
According to a police statement from Collins Asea, the North West Nile Region Police Spokesperson, UPDF officers at Kupia Army Detachment received information from a local woman indicating that a group of six men, five armed with rifles were moving towards Kilaji Village.
The woman was suspicious that that they may be cattle rustlers due to recent cattle raiding incidents and reported the matter to the UPDF for intervention.
The In-Charge of Kupia Army Detachment mobilized personnel to follow up onthe report but were ambushed resulting in an exchange of gunfire that left Sergeant Mukundane Jonas and one cattle raider from South Sudan dead.
Asea says that Sergeant Mukundane’s body was recovered from the scene and transported to Gulu Army Division for further management while the body of the cattle raider was taken to Yumbe Regional Referral Hospital for post-mortem examination.
Asea says an SMG rifle with 26 rounds of ammunition that was recovered at the scene has been secured in the Yumbe Central Police Station Armoury.
He adds that efforts to arrest other suspected cattle raiders are ongoing.
