27-Year-Old Dies After Mob Beating Over Alleged Turkey Theft

A 27-year-old man who was beaten by a mob after allegedly attempting to steal turkeys has died from his injuries, police have confirmed.

David Ongom Mudong, the Aswa West Region Police Spokesperson says the victim has been identified as Arop Jafari, a peasant and resident of Anyomotwon Village in Omoro District, and died at his home on Thursday, hours after community members in Alokolum Centre caught him following a reported theft attempt.

According to a police incident report filed on Friday, the ordeal began around 8:00 pm on April 23, 2026, when Jafari climbed over a fence at Ocen’s home with the intention of stealing turkeys.

Mudong notes that when Jafari tried to flee, residents chased him down, arrested him some distance away, and beat him severely and he was then taken to the office of the Local Council I chairperson, Oryem Boniface, who contacted police.

He adds that before officers could arrive, relatives had already taken the injured man back to his home in Omoro District from where he later died.

Mudong confirms that the matter was reported to police on Friday at around 1:30 pm by Oryem, the LC1 chairperson of Gweno Twom B Cell, where the beating took place.
