Gulu City Security Meets Today Over Tensions Ahead of Market Elections

The Gulu City Security committee is set to hold a meeting today to resolve issues surrounding upcoming elections at Gulu Main Market slated for Saturday May 2, 2026.

The issues that include lack of accountability of two trucks, one donated by President Yoweri Museveni and 20 million shillings also donated to the vendors’ SACCO by the president, were part of reasons for a protest that occurred on Monday at the market.

Others are; poor lighting, potholes, leaking roof and blocked drainage channels.

Peter Banya, the Gulu Resident City Commissioner (RCC) in charge of Laroo-Pece division says the meeting will decide whether to suspend the elections or allow the process to proceed with some procedures put in place such as security deployment to prevent a stampede.

Banya however faults the market leadership for failing to hold Annual General Meetings (AGMs) for the last six years with the vendors before calling for an election.

He explains that an AGM would have addressed the contentious issues between leadership and vendors.

Gulu main market which currently has nearly 5,000 vendors contributes one billion shillings in local revenue every financial year to Gulu City.
