Three people have been confirmed dead and at least 12 others critically injured following a fatal road crash involving a Nile Star bus along the Karuma-Pakwach highway.
Preliminary reports indicate that the bus, which was travelling from Koboko and had made a stopover in Arua City before departing at 9:00 p.m., collided head-on with an oncoming heavy truck at around 1:00 a.m.
Survivor accounts suggest that the crash happened while the bus was attempting to overtake another vehicle when it ran into the path of the truck heading towards Pakwach.
Police say the driver of the bus and two passengers, whose identities are yet to be established, died on the spot.
Several survivors sustained serious injuries.
Some were initially rushed to Anaka General Hospital, while those in critical condition have since been transferred to St. Mary’s Hospital Lacor for specialised treatment.
One victim, according to a relative in Arua City, suffered a broken collarbone.
In response to the incident, the Nile Star bus company dispatched rescue vehicles overnight and again in the morning to assist victims and transport relatives to the scene and health facilities.
Josephine Angucia, the West Nile Regional Police Spokesperson has confirmed the accident but referred further inquiries to the North Kyoga regional police for detailed information.
