Richard Irwenyo, the Gulu City Education Officer has advised schools to consult parents when increasing school fees.
This follows reports that many private schools in the city were increasing school fees without consulting parents.
Irwenyo explains that schools should hold Annual General Meetings at the end of the year to consult parents saying parents are their clients.
The city education officer says failing to consult parents could lead to parents taking their children away which can be detrimental to a school.
In 2023, the Ministry of Education and Sports (MoES) issued guidelines requiring
all private schools in Uganda to seek written authorization from the Permanent Secretary before raising tuition fees.
Under current directives, schools are not permitted to increase tuition by more than 20% in a single academic year without justifiable PTA engagement and approval.
Private schools must provide evidence of engagement with the Parents’ Teachers’ Association (PTA) to agree on the increment before submitting a proposed fee adjustment
