The price of tomatoes has risen in Gulu city because of transport costs and high demand according to the market vendors at Gulu main market.
Agnes Lanyero, a vendor at Gulu main market says that a box of tomatoes used to be sold to them ranging from 100,000 to 150,000 Uganda shillings but now they are being given a box of tomatoes ranging from 350,000 to 450,000 Uganda shillings.
According to Lanyero, this has left them with no choice but to sell tomatoes in a way that would also let them have something at the end of it.
Currently, 2 tomatoes that used to be 500 shillings is now 1000 shillings, 4 tomatoes at 2000 shillings.
Michael Odembe, a vendor at Gulu main market attributes the rise to transport cost and expenses on the road coupled with high demand from various people at the different places like Kisoro, Kabale among others.
Odembe says that this rise has lowered their sales because when they mention the prize to customers, they just walk away.
