
Gulu City has embarked on an operation aimed at cracking down pipe smokers who have reportedly become so many in the City.
Pipe smoking is the burning of loose-leaf tobacco in a traditional bowl-and-stem pipe, allowing the user to draw and savor the smoke.
Despite the misconception that it is safer than cigarettes, pipe smoking is highly dangerous, carrying severe risks for cancer, lung and heart disease, and oral health.
Peter Banya, the Deputy Resident City Commissioner for in charge of Laroo-Pece Division says smoking pipes has reportedly become rampant in the City and yet the leaders of the City are not aware of how it began and how it is spreading.
According to Banya, the young girls are reportedly smoking pipes with a misconception that it will enable them snatch other peoples’ husbands.
According to Banya, smoking pipes leads to cancer, bad smell in the City and generally a bad image because the people who smoke the pipes do it while bare chested.
Banya says they don’t want to either see or hear that people are smoking pipes after the operation and any culprit will be deal with accordingly.
