Ambrose Ayoo, the head teacher Laroo Adraa Primary school in Gulu City is on the spot for renting out two classroom blocks meant for pupils with disabilities.
The classrooms which were meant to accommodate hearing impaired pupils of primary one, two and three were rented out to Green Globe Institute of Applied Sciences, a private agricultural institute.
Denis Ocen Lakwonyero, the Gulu District Councilor V for persons with disabilities who is also a board member at the National Union for Disabled Persons Uganda (NUDIPU) paid an abrupt visit to the school and found hearing impaired pupils of primary two studying under a veranda yesterday.
Monica Akello who was teaching the pupils says she opted to teach under the veranda because the only other option was a classroom with poor natural light and a corrugated chalkboard which is not suitable for special needs learners.
Akello says the head teacher’s advice for them to integrate the special needs pupils with other learners is not practical because they need special attention.
Peter Banya, the Gulu Resident Commissioner in charge Laroo-Pece division is set to hold a meeting with the school authorities, teachers and the City Education department to resolve the matter.
Laroo Adraa primary school has an enrolment of 45 learners with special needs, largely hearing impairment.
