Local groups in Kitgum district are utilizing Village Saving Loan Associations (VSLA) meetings to address issues of teenage pregnancy, school dropout rates, and climate challenges.
They dedicate 30 minutes of each session to discussions on sexual health, gender equality, and climate adaptation.
Reproductive Health Uganda (RHU), in partnership with ADRA Uganda, trained 40 selected members from eight VSLA groups in Katwotwo Parish, Orom East Sub-county.
This training is part of the 2.5-year “Strengthening Community-Based Climate Adaptation in Uganda – STRENGTH” project, which commenced in February 2025 and will continue until December 2027.
Each group selected five members for training, including three women and two men, who will serve as Trainers of Trainees.
The Strengthening Community-Based Climate Adaptation in Uganda and South Sudan (STRENGTH) Project is a transformative initiative aimed at building resilience in vulnerable communities impacted by climate change and conflict.
By promoting climate-smart practices and comprehensive natural resource management, the project empowers displaced populations, host communities, women, agro-pastoralists, and smallholder farmers to adapt to climate-related challenges while maintaining their livelihoods.
Kevin Aloyo, the Kitgum District Focal Person for RHU, explains that the groups were chosen because they are already engaged in farming and VSLA activities.
