Authorities in Patiko sub county, Gulu district have embraced Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) in handling land conflicts which have become rampant in the sub county.
Two weeks ago, a committee chaired by the sub county chairperson Patrick Komakech and other members such as police, human rights defenders, the sub county executive and the area land committee, was formed to handle the land conflicts.
Komakech, the chairperson says that they have been able to mediate and dispose off three serious land conflicts in the last two weeks.
He says that alternative dispute resolution promotes a win-win situation of wrangling parties instead of court processes which are expensive and end up with broken families.
Land wrangles are a contributing factor to violence, food insecurity, loss of valuable assets and school dropout in the area, according to Komakech.
