Gulu district has secured 300 million shillings for clean water in the next financial year, 2026-2027 as reported by Balingtone Olweny p Ongwec, the secretary for works and technical services for Gulu district who also doubles as the councillor V representing the people of Bungatira sub county in Gulu district.

Balingtone says that this financial year ending in June, Gulu district drilled five boreholes and rehabilitated eight boreholes at 163 million shillings.

According to Balingtone, Gulu district has not yet done enough when it comes to providing safe water to it’s people.

He says they realised this on the 16th of this month when commemorating the day of the African child under the theme “Ensuring universal access to water, sanitation and hygiene for every child in Uganda.”

Balingtone says there is an urgency to solve the issue of lack of clean water in Gulu due to illnesses related to poor sanitation and handwashing which is still very low in the district.

According to Gulu district statistics, safe water coverage is at 68.68% and hand washing is at 26%.
