Peter Banya, the Gulu Resident City Commissioner in charge of Laroo-Pece Division has suspended the leadership of Gulu Main Market Association and the market SACCO.
Banya says the suspension was done in agreement with the market leaders including sector heads, executives and opinion leaders during a meeting held on Monday.
The term of office of the suspended leaders ended in February this year.
Attempts to hold fresh elections in April were halted following protests from a section of the vendors who demanded accountability for money raised from the market’s two trucks.
The vendors also demanded accountability for the 20 million shillings which was donated to the market SACCO by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.
Banya says he has since asked the outgoing market leadership to hand over keys of the two trucks.
He says the keys will be in the custody of the town clerk who will then organize for the election of new leaders.
Gulu main market currently has nearly 5,000 vendors contributing one billion shillings in local revenue every financial year to Gulu City.
