Food Rights Alliance Urges Government to Tackle Hunger Crisis

The Food Rights Alliance (FRA), a network of Food Rights Advocates in Uganda has called on government to urgently respond to the hunger situation in drought affected districts in the country.

This follows the death of 18 people in Kotido district as a result of hunger since June after a prolonged dry spell that started in March immediately after what was thought to be the onset of the rainy season.

The Alliance says that over five thousand hectares of crops worth 200 billion shillings have been destroyed leaving families to survive on beer remnants locally known as “Adakai,”

Children who should be in school have reportedly turned to mining for gold and quarrying sites to earn money for food.

The Alliance in a press release over the weekend urged the government to activate emergency food relief for all drought-affected districts immediately and not wait for more lives to be lost.

It also called for the release of contingency funds by the Office of The Prime Minister (OPM) to district disaster management committees to enable rapid local response.
