Lira District authorities have banned night movement and the transportation of livestock due to rising cases of animal theft.
Security data show that at least four animals are stolen from the area in one week.
The ban is one of the 18 resolutions made during a security meeting organized by the office of the Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Lillian Eyal.
The meeting had leaders and livestock dealers in Erute South Constituency from the sub-counties of Barr, Itek, Agali, Awiodyek, Amac, and Amac Town Council.
Erute South was selected because it hosts the biggest livestock market (Amac) located in Awiodyek sub-county.
The other resolutions include documentation of animals from every village, issuance of animal permits in the markets, and reinstating Majan police outpost in Amac market to handle cases related to theft of animals, among others.
During the meeting, Eyal accused some Local council chairpersons of promoting livestock theft through sanctioning and issuing letters to thieves. Meanwhile, Patrick Otim, the LC1 chairperson of Aduu village, also the chairperson of LCI chairpersons in Ogur Town Council, pushed the blame on herdsmen whom he says move around stealing people’s animals, adding to theirs as they move to the market.
