140 youths have graduated from Kitgum Technical Institute after completing a three-month vocational training program supported by the European Union and the United Nations Spotlight Initiative, implemented by UNDP in collaboration with the Ministry of Gender, Labour, and Social Development.
The graduation ceremony, held at the institute, gathered trainees, government officials, and development partners to celebrate what leaders described as a “transformative step” toward economic empowerment for vulnerable youth in Northern Uganda.
Aldo Kidega, the Principal of Kitgum Technical Institute says the beneficiaries were selected from Kitgum and Lamwo districts through the offices of the District Community Development Officers.
According to Kidega, the trainees undertook short courses in various fields, including Electrical Engineering, Hairdressing, Driving, Plumbing, Fashion and Design, Woodwork Technology, and Building and Construction.
In addition to receiving certificates, each graduate was provided with start-up kits tailored to their respective courses, enabling them to begin income-generating activities immediately.
Monica Acayo, a graduate from Kitgum Matidi Sub-county who trained in Plumbing says training has enabled her to become independent.
Williams Komakech, the Lamwo Resident District Commissioner (RDC) says they will continue to monitor the graduates and connect them to markets, financial services, and apprenticeship opportunities.
