Gulu City Council has deployed three pork inspectors across the city to boost inspection services with an aim of ensuring that only safe and wholesome pork is sold within the City.
The meat inspectors are Julius Bosco Oloya who was deployed to Laroo-Pece Division; Isa Ogenrwot deployed to Bardege-Layibi Division and Stella Jane Adong who was deployed to Lacor and For-god Centres.
Mildred Auma Olango, the Gulu City Senior Communications Officer says the meat inspectors have been equipped with tools such as inedible stamp ink, stamp pads, inspection stamps, aprons, belts, knife sharpeners and meat hooks to support their work.
Auma says that the tools were given to the city by the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries (MAAIF).
Edward Omaido, the City Principal Veterinary Officer says that until now, meat inspectors had been operating with limited equipment, making inspections more challenging.
Omaido urges pork dealers to purchase pigs that are free from diseases and harmful toxins.
He reminds traders that selling meat from diseased animals is an offence under Uganda’s public health laws and encourages them to comply with established standards in order to protect consumers, their businesses and the integrity of the pork trade.
