There is an urgent need for the Ministry of Health to recruit more physician doctors at Gulu Regional Referral hospital to attend to the growing number of internal organ complications.
Gulu Regional Referral currently has only two physician doctors yet the facility receives thousands of patients every month from across Acholi sub region and neighbouring districts.
Meanwhile, Uganda has between 600-800 physician doctors attending to a population of over 46 million people.
However, majority of the physicians are concentrated in urban centers, according to statistics from the Association of Physicians of Uganda.
During a two-day medical camp organized by the Association of Physicians of Uganda, over 1,200 patients turned up on the first day alone on Friday and were diagnosed and put on proper treatment for kidney, heart, lung and skin conditions.
Dr. Lydia Nakiyingi, the president of the Association of Physicians of Uganda says proper treatment is important in preventing further complications.
She explains that the patients are expected to make follow up on their treatment from Gulu Regional Referral Hospital where the camp was held.
