The deputy Chief Justice Moses Kazibwe Kawumi has implored Lawyers in Northern Uganda to offer Pro-bono services to residents of Northern Uganda.
Justice Kazibwe made the remarks yesterday while presiding over the opening of Two Days Court of Appeal Criminal Session in Gulu High Court.
Kazibwe notes in his speech that when the legal fraternity offers Probono services to residents, it helps to reduce on the case backlog and also foster development and access to Justice to Vulnerable people in Northern Uganda.
He also urges the Lawyers and Judicial Officers to champion Alternative dispute resolution as it helps in quicker and easier access to Justice for the people of Northern Uganda.
Gulu High Court Resident Judge, Justice Philip Odoki says Gulu High Court Circuit currently has a case backlog of 1,467, adding that the majority of these cases are Land related.
Justice Odoki adds that they are also exploring the use of Alternative dispute resolution including Mediation and Plea bargain which has helped to reduce on the case backlog.
His Worship Geoffrey Ali, the deputy Mayor of Gulu City applauds the Judiciary for bringing the Court of Appeal in Gulu.
He urges the Judiciary Management to make sure that the new Court of Appeal House being constructed in Gulu is inclusive accessible to Persons within the district.
A total of 29 Cases will be heard in the two days session with some dating back to 2010.
The Session will be presided over by the three Justices of the Court of Appeal including, Lady Justice Eva Luswatta, Justice Asa Mugenyi and Justice Musa Sekaana.
