Peter Banya, the deputy Resident City Commissioner for Laroo-Pece division says none of the beneficiaries he has visited have bought cattle under the cattle restocking program.
Cattle restocking in Uganda is a government initiative managed through the Office of the Prime Minister to replace livestock lost by communities during historical armed conflicts and cattle rustling.
Recently five million shillings was given to each beneficiary for buying five cattle at one million shillings each.
But Banya says he has been moving with his team to assess how the beneficiaries have used the money for cattle restocking.
He says some beneficiaries still have their money in the phone up to now while others don’t have the money but also lack nothing like cattle to show.
Banya warns that those who have misused their money meant for restocking should be reminded that the law will deal with them any time soon if they don’t produce the cattle they were meant to buy.
He adds that some beneficiaries have complained of the surge in cattle prices from one million to 1.5 million shillings which has made it impossible for them to buy the cattle but rather keep the money and wait.
Banya urges the beneficiaries to buy at least three cattle so that they have something to show because keeping the money will lead to temptation of misusing it.
He further says that his team will continue assessing how beneficiaries have used the money.
