The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces, UPDF, has decorated 27 General Officers and 39 Senior Officers following their promotion at a ceremony held at the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs Headquarters in Mbuya, Kampala.
Presiding over the ceremony on behalf of the Chief of Defence Forces, Deputy CDF and Inspector General of the UPDF, Lieutenant General Sam Okiding, said the promotions were not only personal achievements but also recognition of years of service, sacrifice, discipline, commitment and leadership.
Lieutenant General Okiding also recognised the contribution of military families, especially spouses, who endure prolonged deployments, transfers and periods of separation in support of officers’ careers.
The Joint Staff Human Resource Management, Major General James Kinalwa, said the promotions form part of the UPDF’s continued professionalisation and are based on competence, dedication and consistent performance.
He urged the newly promoted officers to provide effective leadership and mentor personnel under their command.
Speaking on behalf of the promoted officers, Major General Joseph Musoke Ssemwanga said the new ranks come with increased responsibility and greater public scrutiny. He urged the officers to lead by example and uphold discipline and integrity.
Among those promoted were Major General David Gonyi, Major General Godwin Karugaba, Major General Michael Nyarwa, Major General Richard Karemire, Major General Chris Bagonza and Brigadier General James Basheija Itungo, among others.
The ceremony was attended by senior military and civilian officials, as well as spouses and family members.
