The Secretary General of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Rt. Hon Richard Todwong, has appealed to the Acholi community not to befriend poverty.
Todwong says it is not the work of politicians to eradicate poverty at household level emphasizing that it is the role of the family head to decide to work hard in order to create wealth for their households.
He attributes the surge in the number of street children, locally known as Aguu, to poor moral upbringing by parents who neglect their roles of mentoring children about core values in Acholi tradition, especially hard work.
Todwong is now rallying the Acholi community to embrace proper land use systems, noting that Northern Uganda has the most fertile land that if properly utilized, the region could become the food basket for the country.
His appeal comes at a time when the 2026 Multidimensional Poverty Index report by the Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) shows that 64 percent of the people in Acholi Sub-region are living in poverty.
According to the report, Amuru District ranks as the poorest in the sub-region with a Multidimensional Poverty Index of 0.414, followed by Nwoya District.
