Gulu Leaders Stunned After Pece Stadium Hosts Rally Without District Earnings

Gulu district councillors were today shocked to learn that the district did not earn any money from the use of Pece War memorial Stadium for the Rajiv Ruparelia motor rally event.

The event which was held in October alongside the Octoberfest drew several motor rally drivers and fans from across the country.

Today, councillors demanded to know how much money the district received during the event.

Sunday Braxton Ojara, the Gulu district sports officer, explained how the event organizers were told to pay 5million shillings through the Integrated Revenue Administration System (IRAS) for using the stadium but that they refused to follow the procedure.

Ojara says he was surprised to receive a phone call at night from Christopher Opiyo Ateker, the district chairman, instructing him to go and collect cash from one of the top hotels in town as payment for use of the stadium.

The sports officer says that after consultations with his superiors, he declined to go as he is not authorized to handle cash.
