Dozens of voters in Nebbi Municipality are receiving medical treatment following violent confrontations between supporters of parliamentary candidates Hassim Suleiman and Emmanuel Ongiertho on Monday evening.
The clashes erupted as supporters from separate campaign rallies were returning to their respective offices.
Backers of Hassim Suleiman, the NRM candidate, were returning from a rally in Unjuku Lower Cell in Thatha Division, while supporters of independent candidate Emmanuel Ongiertho were coming from Paminya in Abindu Division.
The two groups converged on the main road and met at the Nebbi main roundabout at around 7:00 p.m., where a confrontation broke out.
Francis Wedunga, the campaign manager for Hassim Suleiman, says supporters from both camps exchanged blows, hurled stones, and used sticks during the fracas.
He adds that at least eight supporters from Suleiman’s camp sustained serious injuries and that the matter has since been reported to Nebbi Territorial Police Station.
Emmanuel Ongiertho also confirms that several of his supporters were injured during the incident.
By broadcast time, police had not released an official statement on the violence.
