Gulu City Moves Closer to Tarmacking 16.33km of Roads Under USMID Funding

The final designs of the 16.33 kms of roads set to be tarmacked in Gulu city under Uganda Support to Municipal Infrastructure Development Program (USMID) Additional Funding, a World Bank project, are underway.

Christo Omara Balmoi, the Gulu City Engineer says Alfred Okwonga, the Gulu City Mayor has halted the pegging of USMID roads under USMID.

A total of 28 roads stretching 16.33 km in Gulu city will be tarmacked under the infrastructural development project which is benefiting 11 cities and municipalities.

The roads include Mama Cave (1.12kms), Okello (0.26 kms), Olango (0.42kms), Upper Churchill (0.26kms), Ojera Alex (0.25kms), Bishop Wani (0.14kms), Lower Churchill (1.34kms) and Okidi Dakamoi (1.12kms) among others.

Joseph Nsimbe, a consultant from Center for Infrastructure consulting Limited in association with continuum engineering limited and cornerstone design and engineering limited says some roads have been reduced in size due to some hindrances such as Perimeter fences constructed by land owners.

This did not go down well with the Mayor who directed the consultant to stick to the initial road sizes before going ahead to ask that the meeting be pushed to another time when the request has been attended to.

Nsimbe tried to explain in vain that the designs were drafts and would be adjusted after the consultative meeting but Okwonga insisted that the meeting will only continue when the consultant returns with the adjustments.
