Gulu Coffee Farmers’ Cooperative has revealed plans to form structures at Sub County level in a bid to reach more farmers.
The cooperative which was formed last year, currently has over 100 members.
Alex Otim, the Chairperson of Gulu coffee farmers’ cooperative says the sub county structures will lead to the formation of a coffee union.
Last year, members of Gulu coffee farmers’ cooperative lost over 4,700 coffee plants during the dry season.
He explains that the Sub County structures will be useful in training new coffee farmers on how to manage the high value crop.
Otim fears that many people may neglect joining the coffee enterprise for fear of such losses if knowledge about the crop does not reach them.
Coffee is one of the 18 priority commodities that farmers are being encouraged to grow under the Parish Development Model (PDM), a government programme aimed at transitioning 3.5 million households in the country from subsistence farming to a money economy through commercial agriculture.
