Gulu District Speaker Seeks UEDCL Support to Ban Bush Burning

Phoebe Ayo, Gulu district speaker has asked Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL) to support the district council in coming up with an ordinance to ban bush burning, a vice that is heavily costing the power distribution company.

Ayo who was speaking during a stakeholder engagement with UEDCL yesterday at the district council hall says that bush burning is a vice that threatens not only electricity supply but food security as crops are destroyed annually in bush fires.

Ayo who is also the Gulu district woman Member of Parliament elect says that the district council has for long wanted to formulate an ordinance to control bush burning but has been constrained by resources.

She adds that bush burning has also frustrated tree planting efforts.

UEDCL says that the company lost 47 electricity poles in wild fires in this dry season in the districts of Gulu, Amuru, and Adjumani leading to prolonged power outages and losses to businesses.
