The Mayor of Gulu City has called on the government to urgently fast-track the construction of the Northern Regional Fish Fry Center, saying the project is key to boosting livelihoods and transforming the local economy.
In a recent interview with Favour FM at his fish farm project in Nwoya district the Mayor stressed that delays and stalled projects have slowed down opportunities for fish farmers and youth groups who are ready to invest in aquaculture.
He notes that the proposed Fish Fry Center will play a critical role in improving the quality and availability of fish fingerlings in Northern Uganda, reducing dependence on distant suppliers and cutting transportation costs for farmers.
Despite an initial investment of approximately Shs.1.5 to 1.8 billion, the facility which includes 24 fish ponds and hatchery infrastructure has been left to waste.
The Mayor urges the responsible ministries to prioritize funding and speed up procurement processes to ensure construction begins without further delay.
The Gulu Fish Fry Centre, also known as the Aquaculture Research and Development Centre located in Laliya Sub-Ward, Laroo-Pece Division in Gulu City is a significant government project that has remained largely non-functional for over 15 years since its inception in 2007/2008 financial year.
