The management of Gulu Secondary School has awarded the two top performers in the Uganda Advanced Certificate of Examination (UACE) in a move aimed at boosting performance in the school among the students.
Rubangakene Andrew, a science student who was the overall performer was given an HP laptop worth two million Uganda shillings.
He scored 17 points with a combination of PCM/ICT while the second-best student; Aber Fiona, an arts student who secured 16 points was awarded with a tablet.
Rubangakene says his goal right from the day he joined the school was to break the record of overall best performance of 18 points by a science student set in 2018.
He attributes his excellence to team work, a well stocked library, equipped laboratory and dedication mixed with experienced teachers who worked tirelessly throughout the two years of studying.
Okumu Benjamin, the director of studies at the school points at commitment from the teachers and all stakeholders for stabilising performance in the last five years.
Irene Mwaka, the school’s headteacher says it’s the school’s culture to award top performers.
She says the school gives out 10 scholarships annually to those with outstanding performance in “O” level to study for free in “A” level at the school for one year.
The beneficiaries must however defend their bursaries by scoring over 12 points in order to enjoy the same privilege in the final year as S.6 candidates.
Last year, 302 students sat for UACE exams at Gulu S.S of whom 158 attained two principal passes and above while 91 got subsidiary passes.
