Gulu Village Health Teams Seek More Government Backing

Over 100 Village Health Teams (VHTs) Members in Gulu City and surrounding areas have appealed to government for more support.

The VHT’s petitioned the office of Father Charles Onen, the Pece-Laroo division Member of Parliament, seeking for his support.

Oyet Micheal Malyamungu, the Team Leader of the VHTs says they lack essential work equipments like gumboots, IDs, transport means among others.

Oyet says that most times they are not recognized even when they refer patients to health facilities.

He urges the government to allocate them some stipends and provide them with working tools to enable them help the communities.

Grace Auma, a VHT from Layik East ward in Pece-Laroo division says they are only given anti-malarial drugs yet sometimes, patients have many conditions.

She urges government to support VHTs with more working tools so that they can work efficiently.

Father Onen says VHTs play a very critical role in primary health care adding that he will table the plight of VHTs to Parliament when they reconvene next year.

He adds that on a personal level, he will set up health Information desk at his office to address some of these challenges.

William Onyai, the Gulu district Health Educator says that VHT’s serve on voluntary basis and they are normally supported by the health facilities budget.

Onyai says  they have been supporting VHT’s with other partners so that they deliver quality services.
