Heavy Rains Halt Transport on Abim–Lira Road in Otuke District

Heavy rains have halted transport on the Abim-Lira road in Otuke District, leaving many vehicles immobilized in mud and passengers stranded.

The affected section, located in Acan Pii Parish, Ogwete Sub-County, is approximately 500 meters to 1 kilometer from the junction linking Otuke and Soroti districts.

Over ten vehicles, including trucks and passenger buses, have been stuck for days, with drivers and passengers facing significant challenges.

Nancy Opedur, a mother of four travelling with her children, says they have endured hunger, mosquito bites, and cold weather for over 24 hours.

Noble Okidi, a student at St Mary’s Lugazi, says he fears reporting late to school and is uncomfortable spending nights in the bush.

Napeyok Sarah, who was travelling to Mulago Hospital to seek treatment, says prolonged sitting is worsening her condition.

Meanwhile, Beatrice Lulisa, a trader dealing in fresh vegetables, says her perishable goods are spoiling because vehicles are failing to move.

Motorists and residents urged the government to grade the road, install proper drainage systems, and implement long-term solutions to prevent repeated destruction during rainy seasons.
