Kitgum Matidi Town Council market is poised for a major transformation under the Government’s GROW Project through the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development, aimed at improving market infrastructure and supporting women entrepreneurs.
The market, which has been facing numerous challenges, including inadequate shade, poor sanitation, and a lack of basic amenities, was selected for the project after vendors submitted an application through the town clerk’s office.
Bernard Okuyo, Construction Engineer for the GROW Project under the Ministry of Gender and Social Development, reveals that the market will receive a range of upgrades, including new stalls, lighting or power, water, paved walkways and sanitary facilities, among others.
Speaking during a fact-finding visit to the market, Okuyo said the project aims to address the challenges faced by vendors, mostly women, who have been struggling to conduct their businesses in the facility.
Frida Amaron, Finance Officer for the GROW Project, declined to disclose the project budget and timeline but revealed that Kitgum Matidi Town Council Market was one of 700 facilities selected countrywide out of over 1,000 applications received by the ministry.
Madalena Aweko, Chairperson of Kitgum Matidi Market Vendors, expresses gratitude to the Ministry of Gender, Labour, and Social Development for the initiative, saying the market has been neglected for a long time, mostly by district or Town Council authorities.
