Kitgum Seeks Shs30M for Street Light Repairs

Kitgum Municipality requires about 30 million shillings to repair dozens of broken street lights that have left several areas of the town in darkness, according to municipal engineers.

Alexis Abonga, the Kitgum Municipal Civil Engineer says a recent assessment by the engineering department found that more than 30 street lights are currently not functioning across different parts of the municipality.

He adds that the faulty lights, most of them solar-powered, were installed along major roads and public spaces to improve security and support businesses operating at night; however, many of them have stopped working due to technical faults and vandalism.

Abonga explains that repairing the damaged lights requires significant funding, which the municipality is still struggling to mobilize.

According to the engineer, fixing a single solar street light costs about 1.3 million shillings, making it difficult for the municipality to restore all the faulty units at once.

He says the engineering department has so far managed to repair about 20 street lights, but several others remain unrepaired due to limited funds.
