Kitgum’s Akworo Irrigation Project Set for Government Management

The Ministry of Water and Environment has announced plans to take over the management of the Akworo Small-scale Irrigation Project in Kitgum district.

The project, valued at 985 million shillings, was commissioned four years ago but has since collapsed due to poor management and other challenges.

Beatrice Atim Anywar, the State Minister of Water and Environment says the takeover is aimed at rescuing the project and making it a success.

According to her, the takeover is triggered by the poor management of the project since it was handed over to the community.

The Akworo Small-scale irrigation project, located in Man Woko Village, Labongo Amida, Kitgum district, was constructed by the Ministry of Water and Environment with funding from the government in 2020.

The project, which sits on a 10.5-acre piece of land, had components of irrigation farmland, well-laid irrigation drip pipelines, a solar-powered pump station, and water tanks of 10,000 cubic liters.

It was meant to benefit over 10 farmer groups practicing horticulture in Labongo Amida Sub-county Kitgum district.
