LC III Poll Violence in Sembabule Leaves Two Shot

Two people are hospitalized after sustaining gunshot injuries during violence linked to the LC III elections in Sembabule District.

The victims, Rogers Ssekiwala and Meddie Male—both residents of Sembabule Town Council—are supporters of George William Kangave, the National Unity Platform (NUP) candidate for Sembabule Town Council Chairperson.

They are currently receiving treatment at Masaka Regional Referral Hospital and Guma Private Health Centre, respectively.

According to Kangave, the violence occurred in the early hours of Tuesday as his team was distributing appointment letters to polling agents.

He claims they received intelligence that security operatives were escorting a rival candidate who was allegedly bribing and intimidating voters.

Kangave alleges that armed military personnel were working in coordination with his independent rival, Jackson Murungi Bashira, to threaten voters ahead of the election.

He says that when his team confronted the operatives over the alleged irregularities, they were chased and shot at, leaving two of his supporters injured.

However, Jackson Murungi Bashira, the independent candidate accused of misusing military operatives, denied the allegations.

Meanwhile, the Sembabule District Returning Officer, Gracious Eryaiza, confirms awareness of the incident, saying the affected individuals had been advised to report the matter to the police.

He adds that investigations into the violence are ongoing.
