Police in Mbarara City have launched investigations into an attempted robbery and attack on the Rwizi Regional Police Commander, Alfred Bangambaki.
Samson Kasasira, the Rwizi Region Police Spokesperson, says that on Saturday night, machete-wielding thugs riding on a motorcycle ambushed Bangambaki at his home.
Preliminary investigations indicate that Bangambaki, who lives in Mbaguta Cell, Ruharo Ward, Mbarara City North Division, was returning home with Areeba Munda when the assailants waited at his gate.
Kasasira says the thugs tried to attack Bangambaki with a panga, damaging his car in the process.
Bangambaki defended himself, incapacitating one of the attackers, after which the thugs fled the area on their motorcycle.
Areeba sustained facial injuries from glass particles from the damaged car windows.
Badru Nkabeiha, Defence Secretary for Mbaguta Cell, says the deceased suspect is not known to residents in the area.
The body of the suspect, whose identity is yet to be established, was taken to Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital mortuary.
Police say operations are ongoing to identify and apprehend the remaining suspects.
The incident comes just weeks after Kemigisha Vianneh, a candidate in the Bushenyi District Woman MP race, was attacked and injured at her gate in Survey Cell, also in Mbarara City North Division.
