Mobile Money Shutdown: Affected Users Demand Government Compensation

Government has been asked to compensate people affected by the shutdown of mobile money services across the country during and after the presidential and Member of Parliament elections.

Mobile money services were shut down last Tuesday alongside internet, financially locking out many Ugandans.

Gilbert Olanya, the MP for Kilak South in Amuru district has asked government to explain the logic behind shutting down mobile money services which employs a big population of Ugandans.

Olanya says that many people who use mobile money to save have been unable to access their money since the shutdown, crippling business and people’s ability to take care of their homes.

Patrick Okello Onguti, the MP elect for Aswa County in Gulu district says many people in his constituency depend on mobile money to save their money since there are no commercial banks.

He has joined Olanya in asking government to compensate people in the mobile money business because their livelihoods were suffocated.
