Darius Nabaasa, the Local Council I (LCI) chairperson of Mukibungo Village in Kanyamahwa Parish, Nyakagyeme Sub-county, Rukungiri District, is in police custody for allegedly defacing campaign posters belonging to the Minister for Security, Jim Muhwezi Katugugu.
Muhwezi is contesting for the Rujumbura County Member of Parliament seat as the National Resistance Movement (NRM) flag bearer against Fred Turyamuhweeza of the People’s Front for Freedom (PFF).
Nabaasa, who is currently being held at Rukungiri Police Station, was arrested yesterday after reportedly going into hiding following the alleged defacement of campaign posters on January 7, 2026, at around 10:00 p.m.
The incident is said to have occurred at Half London Trading Centre in Mukibungo Village, Nyakagyeme Sub-county.
According to Obed Aryanyijuka, a resident of the area, a team from Minister Muhwezi’s campaign had earlier on January 7 displayed campaign posters at Half London Trading Centre as the minister held a campaign rally in the area.
Aryanyijuka says this reportedly angered Nabaasa, who accused Muhwezi’s team of displaying posters without first seeking his permission.
Aryanyijuka further states that later in the night, Nabaasa allegedly led a group that vandalized the posters.
Upon discovering the act, residents reported the matter to relevant authorities, including the police.
The Kigezi Region Police Spokesperson, Elly Maate, confirms the arrest and said police are still hunting for two other suspects who allegedly acted alongside Nabaasa in destroying the posters.
