No candidate has been nominated to replace the late Nicholas Otim Ojara in the race for Division Councilor representing Pongdwongo Ward to the Pager Division Council in Kitgum Municipality.
The deceased, Nicholas Otim Ojara, an independent candidate, reportedly died at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Kitgum, on February 3rd, after being admitted with complaints of general body weakness.
Following the death of the candidate, the Electoral Commission has set Monday, 9th, and Tuesday, 10th, as the dates for nominations to get more candidates to pave the way for a by-election after the earlier poll was halted in line with electoral laws.
Betty Atim Owot, the Kitgum District Returning Officer, told Favour fm that by 4 pm yesterday, no candidates had come for nominations.
She adds that she would formally report to the Electoral Commission headquarters in Kampala that no replacement candidate was nominated.
As a result, the election will proceed with the remaining three candidates already in the race: Kumakech Francis of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), Okweara Joseph of the National Resistance Movement (NRM), and Opwonya Ronald, an independent candidate.
Owot confirms that polling for the Pondwongo Ward Division Councilor will take place on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, with campaigns ending on Sunday, February 15, 2026.
Voting will be conducted across five polling stations in the ward.
She also announces that the same day will see several postponed and aborted elections conducted across Kitgum District.
These include elections for District Woman Councilor for Akwang and Labongo Akwang sub-county, and Woman Councilor for Mucwini West, which were earlier halted due to ballot paper errors.
