
A suspected poacher in Myene Sub‑county, Oyam District has voluntarily surrendered an AK‑47 sub machine gun, number EK4962, with three round of live ammunition.
The rifle was found dumped last Friday at the home of James Ogwal, LCIII Chairperson of Myene Sub‑County who has been persuading the poachers to abandon the illegal and dangerous activity.
The firearm is suspected to have been used in poaching activities around Murchison National Game Park.
Ogwal, the Myene Sub county LCIII Chairperson explains that, he has been engaging with poachers and this has led to peaceful recoveries, bringing the total number of firearms recovered in the Sub‑County to 44 during his tenure.
Oyam Resident District Commissioner (RDC), Sgt. James Shilako, confirms receiving the weapon and appeals to poachers to abandon illegal hunting.
He says, poaching is a trend that community members should jointly prevent because it reduces the number of animals that bring Uganda Foreign Exchange.
