Peter Banya Issues Apology Over Violence at NUP Campaign in Gulu City

Peter Banya, the Gulu Resident City Commissioner (RCC) in charge Laroo-Pece Division has apologized for the violence meted out on the 6th of this month on National Unity Platform (NUP) supporters during Robert Kyagulanyi also known as Bobi Wine’s campaign in Gulu City.

Banya was speaking during the Peace Journalism Foundation awards held at Gulu Women Economic Development and Globalization (GWED-G) offices in Gulu City.

He says the incident is regrettable and admits that mistakes were made.

Banya who did not offer further details however says security personnel were incited.

He denies that security personnel were behind the death of a 16-year-old student; Joshua Leon Otim who was beaten and later died of his injuries.

Otim was reported to have been attacked with a blunt object while at Awere grounds where Bobi Wine held his campaign rally.

But according to Banya, they have secured a video recording which shows that the victim was beaten at 3:00am of that same day and not stoned during the campaign as reported earlier.

David Kamya, the 4th Division Infantry Public Information Officer who was also present at the Peace Journalism Awards says the army are human beings and also make mistakes.

He urges journalists to ensure to report facts to avoid sparking violence.
