Police Probe Drowning of Man in Water Hole in Lira City

Police in Lira East Division are investigating the circumstances under which a man drowned in a drilled water hole at Ireda Central Park Cell, Lira East Division, in Lira City.

The deceased, who is only identified as “boy,” is said to have drowned on Tuesday evening, and his body was retrieved yesterday afternoon after several failed attempts, including a rescue by police.

The hole is estimated to be about 40 feet deep.

It is alleged that the deceased, his boss, and another colleague had gone to repair a drilled water source at the home of one Oscar Oula, where he reportedly entered the hole as part of the repair process while the colleague and boss waited outside.

Moments later, the deceased was seen waving his hands in a desperate attempt to call for help, forcing the duo to lower the boss down into the hole to rescue him. However, the boss is said to have immediately fallen unconscious before he was pulled back and rushed to the hospital for immediate medical attention.

Jimmy Patrick Okema, the North Kyoga Region police spokesperson says that since Tuesday police fire and rescue services have responded to the scene, making efforts to evacuate the body from the drilled water hole.

According to Okema, the deceased might have drowned after suffocating due to a lack of oxygen.
