UWA Consults Leaders On Electric Fence Around Kidepo

The Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) has begun consultations with leaders from six districts bordering Kidepo Valley National Park on plans to construct an electric fence aimed at reducing human–wildlife conflict, particularly elephant attacks on nearby communities.

A consultative meeting held today in Kitgum brought together district leaders, Resident District Commissioners, security officials, and technical staff from Agago, Kitgum, Abim, Karenga, Kotido, and Kaabong districts.

The discussions focused on strategies to protect communities living near the Karenga Community Wildlife Management Area.

John Makombo says the consultations are part of a process that began in August 2024 to engage local leaders before the full implementation of the fencing project.

According to Makombo, the government has already constructed 27 kilometres of electric fencing along the boundary of the conservation area in Karenga District.

Plans are underway to extend the fence to cover about 292 kilometres along the communities bordering the park.  The fencing project follows the government’s allocation of about 15 billion shillings to construct wildlife deterrent fences around several national parks across the country.

Christopher Arwai Obol says districts bordering the park are expected to receive about three billion shillings to support fencing along the planned 292-kilometre stretch.
